Mother's Day

No, I'm not late, Mother's Day in France is on Sunday, May 26th.

I won't spend it with my mother, though, as she's working in La Rochelle for the whole weekend.

Je ne vais pas passer la fête des mères avec ma Maman qui travaille à La Rochelle tout le weekend.

I had created and written a card for her... I was so proud of myself for not forgetting (we're not good with dates in my family and often miss these kind of events, but we always say it doesn't matter because we love each other every single day)... Until I realised that I was currently getting my parents' mail while they are both away, so if I posted it, I would actually receive the card.

Je lui avais bien créé et écrit une petite carte, mais j'ai soudain réalisé que pendant leur absence, mes parents faisaient suivre leur courrier... chez moi! Du coup, je ne vais pas m'envoyer la carte à moi-même!

Of course, I'll send an email and will phone her... But that would be like every other day: I call my mom at least once a day and often send an email to let her know something I forgot to say on the phone.

Bien sûr, je vais envoyer un e-mail et lui téléphoner, mais cela n'aura rien de spécial, puisqu'on s'appelle toujours plusieurs fois par jour!

So I thought my Mom deserved a post.

Du coup, ma Maman mérite bien un petit article!

I'm very, very proud of my Mom's work. She's a writer and she travels all around France to meet her readers (that's what she's doing in La Rochelle this weekend).

Je suis très, très fière du travail de ma Maman. Elle est écrivain et voyage dans toute la France pour rencontrer ses lecteurs, c'est pour ça qu'elle est à La Rochelle ce weekend.

 Her series (book 1 is showed above) keeps her readers waiting for more books. And I'm lucky enough to read them before they are published!

Sa série (tome 1 ci-dessus) tient les lecteurs en haleine, impatients de lire les nouveaux tomes que j'ai la chance de lire avant publication la plupart du temps!

I'm happy that we share a common interest for history and for old china. Every weekend we spend about an hour just describing what we found in "empty-your-attic" sales (French yard sales).

Je suis heureuse que l'on partage le goût de l'histoire et de la vieille vaisselle. Chaque weekend, on passe des heures à se décrire au téléphone ce qu'on a acheté dans des vide-greniers et puis, pour le cas où ce ne serait pas suffisant, on s'envoie des photos!

This is a picture I e-mailed my Mom last weekend with some of my finds (sorry about the blank light, it was a grey day and it wasn't meant for the blog).

Tile After Tile

Cottage Flooring Ideas - Part 6

I know some of you can't sleep anymore because they are wondering what I choose for my cottage floor. So here's the final reveal.

Mon petit doigt m'a dit que certaines ne peuvent plus dormir tant elles se posent de questions sur mon sol. J'ai pitié de vous et voilà donc les photos.

I knew I wanted a light stone floor for my cottage. I thought it would be lovely in a house that only has small windows as is typical in a fisherman's cotttage. But it proved to be too expensive. 

Je savais que je voulais de la pierre claire pour renvoyer la lumière ne venant que de petites fenêtres typiques des maisons de pêcheur. Mais c'était trop cher pour moi.

So I spent months trying to find the tile that would replicate what I had in mind. It took so long my parents joked it was as long as a pregnancy.

J'ai donc passé des mois à chercher un carrelage qui soit une imitation qui me convienne. Cela a pris tant de temps que mes parents disaient que c'était aussi long qu'une grossesse.

Some cheap imitations just have all their tiles the same and it just shows immediately they are fake. 

Les imitations les moins chères n'ont qu'un seul carreau dans lequel il y a systématiquement le même défaut au même endroit... Dès qu'on en voit plusieurs en même temps, on ne voit plus que ça!

I finally found some that had enough different tiles to look like I wanted them to look.

J'ai donc cherché un carrelage dont les carreaux soient fabriqués avec un maximum de moules différents.

I must say I'm very happy with my choice. The variation in the shades of the tiles is perfect to hide dirty paws and I like the idea of a fairly neutral floor that'll allow me to do whatever I want with the walls.

Je suis ravie de ce choix. L'irrégularité du coloris fait merveille pour cacher les pattes sales des (rares) jours de pluie. C'est assez neutre pour me laisser toute liberté de faire ce que je veux avec les murs.

The best compliment I have had yet about this floor? It came from my Dad who said : "It doesn't look new". (I'm not sure he meant it as a compliment!)

Le plus beau compliment que j'ai reçu sur ce carrelage? Il est venu de mon Papa qui m'a dit: "On ne dirait pas qu'il est neuf, ce carrelage!" Je ne suis pas sûr qu'il pensait que c'était un compliment.

I have a "wow" moment every time I step into the cottage now!

Some Like It Hot

I know, I know, I had kind of promised a floor reveal, but I need to take pictures and I'm beyond tired tonight. I can barely keep my eyes open to see what I type (there might be even more typos than usual...).

Je sais, je sais, j'avais promis de montrer mon sol, mais là, après un weekend à essayer de dépoussiérer la maison, tout ça pour que les ouvriers refassent de la poussière ce matin, je suis juste trop épuisée pour prendre des photos (le ciel gris n'aide pas non plus).

We're having the coldest spring weather ever here in Brittany, so to keep my carpenter warm, we have a little coffee break every morning at 10 am ; that is if I'm not working. I set everything ready for him to have it on his own if I am.

C'est le printemps le plus froid depuis que j'habite en Bretagne et je réchauffe le menuisier avec une petite pause café tous les matins. Ce matin, c'était servi dans des tasses que je venais de dénicher dans un vide-grenier du week-end dernier. Remarquez le gris du ciel, relevé avec une pointe de gris...

Today I served it in cups I just bought last weekend in an "empty your attic" sale. You may have notice the sky is grey with a hint of grey.

I know the pictures aren't the best, but if you had seen the expression on the carpenter's face when I took picture of the tray... You would have hurried like I did before he phoned the people in white coats...

Now I have good news about the cottage. The drywalls in the kitchen and dining-room are beginning to be up and that means my boiler is back on its wall and working! Well working is a big word, there's still a little problem with the heating, but two words make my day: HOT + WATER.

Bon maintenant, des nouvelles de la rénovation. Le placo arrive et avec lui la possibilité de remettre la chaudière. Tout me ravit: son doux ronron, le bruit qu'elle fait en s'arrêtant, et même, je la trouve moins moche qu'avant. Rien de tel que l'absence pour vous faire comprendre combien un être vous est cher!!!

You might think a picture of an old boiler has no place on a decoration blog, but you'd be wrong because - a) it makes the owner of the said blog very, very happy and thus I hope my creativeness will return... It has been numbed by cold water lately...

b) it is located in the kitchen and I'll have to find a creative way to hide it (see how that's linked to a?)

Donc, si vous pensez que comme le veut le plombier, je suis en train de peindre le bout de mur derrière les radiateurs, pas du tout! Chut, ne lui dites pas, mais je prends un bain... chaud!

Cottage Flooring Ideas - part 5

If you've followed the series, you know that I was looking for the best flooring for my French fisherman's cottage. I already ruled out hardwood floor, terracotta and slate, though I loved all these options.

Si vous avez suivi la série, vous savez que je suis à la recherche du sol parfait pour mon petit cottage de pêcheur. J'ai éliminé le parquet, la terre cuite et l'ardoise, même si j'adorais ces différentes options.

Hardwood floor was too dangerous since the cottage is known to be built on wet grounds.

Terracotta and slate were ruled out for "light" reasons. A stone fisherman's cottage has small windows and the light is an issue. There was no way I could pay an architect to see if the cottage would still stand if I opened larger windows, nor did I really want to. Small windows are part of the charm of the cottage.

Le parquet a été mis hors jeu par des problèmes d'humidité. J'ai renoncé à la terre cuite et à l'ardoise pour des questions de luminosité. Ma vieille maison en pierre a de petites fenêtres et un sol sombre absorbe trop de lumière.

I went to different stores but couldn't find any tile that stole my heart, swept me off my feet, melt my heart... You see the kind I was looking for.

J'ai hanté les magasins de bricolage sans rien trouver qui ne me satisfasse vraiment.

Then one day, I was looking at a furniture catalogue while sipping tea (I do nearly everything sipping tea), when I noticed that every time I had a "wow" moment on the pictures was when there was a light stone floor.

Puis un jour, alors que je feuilletais un catalogue de meubles en sirotant du thé, je me suis aperçue que toutes les photos sur lesquelles mes yeux s'arrêtaient avaient un point commun: un sol en pierre claire.

I just knew it would be perfect for the cottage: it wasn't too dark so it wouldn't trap the light, it looked old so it wouldn't betray the cottage and stone has naturally an uneven aspect that would hide dirty paws (I'm still working on the "wipe your paws" rule with the cats...)

J'ai eu un éclair! C'était parfait pour mon cottage: ce n'était pas sombre et renverrait donc la lumière, ce n'était pas moderne et les variations naturelles de couleur de la pierre cacheraient gentiment les traces de papattes sales (je travaille encore à apprendre aux chats à s'essuyer les pattes et c'est pas gagné...)

And then, very heart-lightedly, I checked on the Internet for stone flooring... And bang, I saw the prices and knew it wouldn't be possible...

Toute contente de moi, je suis allée chercher sur Internet des renseignements sur les sols en pierre. Là, j'ai vu les prix et patatras! Hors budget, de très loin!

7. Via House to Home

So what's a girl with a cottage dream supposed to do?

a) cry her heart out,

b) stomp her feet till there's a hole in the new slab,

c) find a plan B...

Alors, qu'est-ce que j'ai fait?

a) J'ai pleuré toutes les larmes de mon corps,

b) J'ai tellement tapé du pied qu'il y a un trou dans la nouvelle dalle,

c) J'ai trouvé un plan B...

Before It Gets Better

May Mantel Porch

I know everyone  (well not everyone in the whole world, but at least readers of this blog) is waiting for the next episode of the Cottage Flooring series, but let's juts take a little break, shall we?

Bon tout le monde piaffe de lire le prochain épisode de la série sur les sols, mais faisons une toute petite pause, d'accord?

My front porch is a too shabby tiny veranda, but it's about the only place I can decorate lately.

Because inside, before it gets better, it's really chaotic. The kitchen and dining-room now have proper insulation. The plumber also got some of the pipes ready for the boiler to be put back in its place.

A l'intérieur, c'est le tempête avant le calme (enfin j'espère): l'isolation est posée, le plombier est venu mettre tous les tuyaux pour reposer la chaudière. Du coup, mon menuisier n'arrêtait pas de se cogner dans les fameux tuyaux... que j'ai donc ornés de mon couvre-théière, histoire de ne pas avoir un blessé sur le chantier! Vous le voyez?

The carpenter kept bumping his head in the said pipes, so I put a tea cosy there so he wouldn't hurt himself. Can you see it?

So let's go back to a few weeks before today. I was happily shopping, believing the renovation will soon be over (I'm gullible that way...) when I stumbled upon a "take three letters, pay for two" sign! It was the end of April, so I thought it would be fun to buy a M, an A and get the Y free to put later on the mantle.

Du coup, le seul petit (tout petit) coin que je peux décorer est ma véranda (enfin un grand mot pour un truc de 1,50 mètres carré...)

Fast forward to the beginning of May, right after the flooding that delayed the renovation... The mantle is hidden behind a shelf that holds some of my everyday dishes, the sofa, the coffee table, a couple boxes, all stuck there so the workers can have some space... I can't even get to whatever decoration is left on it. Plus I'm in no mood to decorate and feel my mind is drawing a blank.

 J'avais acheté les lettres en MDF brut lors d'une promo trois pour le prix de deux... Mais je n'avais aucune inspiration... Jusqu'à ce que je tombe le week-end dernier sur un petit sucrier et un petit mug en porcelaine anglaise turquoise avec des fleurs blanches... D'un coup, ça m'a paru évident.

Fast forward to last weekend. I went to some "Empty-your-attic" sales (the Britton version of yard sales) and found an adorable turquoise mug and sugar bowl made of English china. At that moment, inspiration struck.

Back home I painted the letters in some turquoise paint I already had and stenciled a white rose to match the china set I had found.

I framed a postcard a friend sent me last week (what a colour-coincidence, isn't it?): it's sketch from Degas... From what she wrote, I'm not sure she loved it, but I think it's perfect.

J'ai reçu la semaine dernière une carte postale d'une amie reproduisant une esquisse de Degas: j'ai tout de suite adoré (pas elle, d'après ce qu'elle m'écrit) et je l'ai donc installée dans la véranda.

The cushion is where the second cat sleeps, so it has to be there (though I could remove it for pictures, as a true blogger would do), but I thought I managed to get it to blend in the month's theme!

Le coussin n'est pas là pour la déco, c'est là que chat n°2 passe ses nuits... Il a l'air d'apprécier sa nouvelle housse... Mais je dois avouer qu'il n'a pas toujours l'air de comprendre mes idées... Il a regardé les lettres pendant un moment, se demandant sûrement si ça risquait de l'assommer!  

It felt so good to take some time to decorate this afternoon. It will probably be covered with dust tomorrow...

C'était bien agréable de décorer un peu cet aprem'. Demain les gros travaux reprennent!
